vision board

Entering high school is an exciting time. You’re in the last leg of your education journey. Only a couple years separate you from graduation day and the goals you have set for yourself in adulthood. But those years will go by quickly.

During your freshman year, consider creating a vision board that you can take with you throughout your high school career. It offers a tangible look at your goals and allows you to think through a clear path to reaching them. And the beauty is, a vision board can be anything you want. A poster with pasted images, a corkboard with pinned inspirations, or a digital representation of your future dreams. Either way, it will inspire you as you travel to your destination (your goals) despite any roadblocks you may encounter.

Decide on the Design

First, decide which version you want to make. Will having a vision board hung on your bedroom wall be most effective for you? Is it more ideal to have a digital copy saved in your phone to look at during the school day? Once you have decided, you will know what materials you need. For a digital board, all you need is Google or Pinterest for images and Canva to collage those images together. It’s free to create an account in these programs – if you don’t already have them.

Match Images and Quotes to Your Goal

Next, pick images that represent your dream school, your dream career, and any goals you have for getting there. Your answers may change along the way, and that’s OK. It’s important to start somewhere. If you develop new career goals or decide on a different school later, simply swap out the images and/or quotes.

Put it All Together

When you have your ideas, your images, your inspirational quotes ready to go, it’s time to put it all together. As you place each piece, your vision will begin to come to life. Refer to it during the hard times and use it as inspiration to start planning the path to reach your goals. That includes how much it’ll cost and what you can earn (through scholarships) or need to borrow (through student loans).
