You may have heard recent news that 16 billion login credentials and passwords were exposed in multiple data breaches since the beginning of the year. Big names like Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Facebook all have affected customers.
News like this can be scary. However, it’s important to remember that there are things you can do to keep your accounts safe.
First, change your passwords for any accounts associated with the breach. Use strong passwords that are at least 12 characters with a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Also, make sure you’re not reusing passwords across multiple accounts. Then, consider the following for additional security.
Turn on multi-factor authentication. This offers an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring an additional form of identification beyond a password. It is often a passcode sent via text or email. If you receive a passcode that you didn’t request, then you know that someone is trying to gain access to your account and can change your password.
Start using a password manager. If you have trouble remembering passwords, this may be your best option. A password manager creates and stores strong passwords for each of your accounts. Turn on multi-factor authentication for your password manager to make sure all your passwords remain protected.
Switch from passwords to passkeys when possible. Not all companies have adopted passkey usage, but Facebook, Apple, and Google have. Passkeys can be a uniquely generated key created specifically for your device. It could also include biometrics like a fingerprint, face scan, or PIN, similar to what you use to open your locked phone.
