History
A
credit union is a member-owned, member-controlled, not-for-profit
cooperative financial institution organized to provide its members
with a safe place to save and borrow at reasonable rates, and obtain
related financial services. A credit union is a group of people
who have a common bond, such as their workplace or the community
in which they live, who join together to pool their money into a
financial cooperative they own and supervise. The purpose of such
a credit union is for people with that common bond to help other
people achieve their financial goals in life through offering low
cost loans and high interest savings.
It
was with this spirit in mind that seven people pooled their knowledge
and assets to begin a military member credit union on December 14,
1954. This was known as Pine Castle Air Force Base Federal Credit
Union.
In
1958, Pine Castle Air Force Base was renamed McCoy Air Force Base
in honor of Colonel Michael N.W. McCoy, and the credit union followed
suit. From that time, it has been known as McCoy Federal Credit
Union.
In
1974, McCoy Air Force Base was closed. Subsequently, in 1981, McCoy
Federal became a community chartered credit union serving those
who lived and worked in Southside Orlando, between Michigan Street,
I-4, Highway 15/15A and South County Line.
McCoy
Federal's first branch office, the Curry Ford Office, was opened
in 1985 near the corner of Curry Ford Road and Highway 436.
The
Williamsburg Branch Office began as a store front operation in 1990
on Central Florida Parkway. It wasn't long before this office had
outgrown the original space, so in the summer of 1995 it was relocated
to a new building on Central Florida Parkway near Orange Blossom
Trail. It is now known as the Central Florida Parkway Office.
Due
to the continued growth and stability of McCoy, management and the
Board of Directors cut the ribbon to open the Michigan Street Office
located in the Market at Southside in 1993.
In
July 1997, McCoy received approval from NCUA to expand its boundaries.
McCoy Federal was able to accept members who live, work, worship or attend
school south of Highway 50 in Orange County, Florida. Membership
is also open to members of the immediate families of those who live,
work, worship or attend school south of Highway 50 in Orange County.
In
October 1999, McCoy Federal opened its West Orlando Office on L.B.
McLeod Road and Kirkman Road.
In
March 2002, McCoy opened its sixth office located on Chickasaw Trail
in East Orlando at Lake Underhill. This office features the latest
in technology to serve members with the utmost safety.
In June 2003, McCoy Federal received approval to expand the membership boundaries to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in all of Orange County.
By the end of 2003, McCoy opened a new Administrative office building along side a new office location at 41 & 35 West Michigan Street. McCoy's operations located at The Market at Southside was relocated to the new office at 35 West Michigan Street.
In June 2006, our 7th location opened in Apopka at 931 N. Park Avenue serving our members in Northwest Orange County. Our 8th location was opened June of 2007. This location is near the Loop and Hunter's Creek in the Osceola Cororate Center at 1221 W. Osceola Parkway in Kissimmee.
In December 2006, McCoy received approval from NCUA to expand its field of membership to include Orange, Lake, Seminole and Osceola County, Florida.
We opened our 9th location in Clermont in February 2008 to serve our members in Lake County. The Clermont office is located at 4300 S. US Hwy 27 at the Legends Pointe Center.
Today, McCoy Federal is one of the largest Credit Unions in Central Florida serving over 60,000 members in 4 counties.
